Barrie is going to the dogs in September. The OPP and Barrie Police Service are joining canine teams from around Canada for the 2023 National Police Dog Championship from September 5th-9th. Teams will compete in the categories of obedience, agility, and fastest dog.
The Canadian Police Canine Association was formed in 1978 by dog handlers who were interested in seeing how their counterparts were performing in the same job as themselves. The organization now assists police departments in training police service dogs and educating the public about the amazing work that these police canines do. Last month, there was an outpouring of support for the Toronto Police Service after they suffered the loss of the first canine member killed in the line of duty. Bingo, a two-year-old German Shepherd, was shot and killed during a search for an armed suspect. The suspect has been charged with second-degree murder in a shooting death in an Etobicoke apartment building.
The National Police Dog Championship is held in a different city every year, and this is the first time that Barrie is hosting the event. The free public event is at Sadlon Arena on Saturday, September 9th. Events are at 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
Check it out and support our police canines!
