Thunder Bay’s downtown reconstruction estimated at $11 million

The price tag for a reconstruction of streets and underground infrastructure in the heart of Thunder Bay’s north core has ballooned to $11 million but city councillors say the investment will stimulate economic development and transform the downtown into a more dynamic public space. The project would transform Red River Road between Court and Cumberland streets, as well as Court Street between Red River and Park Avenue, over the course of the 2023 and 2024 construction seasons. The plan includes the replacement of water and sewer, reconstructing roadway and boulevards including a curbless “flexible” street on Red River, expanding pedestrian and public space, and adding more seating, planters and greenery, and more room for patios.

The changes had strong support from hundreds of residents who took part in surveys and in-person consultation events, and the city reports positive feedback from area businesses, despite the prospect of significant disruption over the next two years.

Sleep With Wolves In Timmins

Imaging sleeping with wolves – what an experience that would be! That’s about to become a reality thanks to an expansion at Cedar Meadows Resort in Timmins. Resort owner Richard Lafleur’s innovative project has received $300,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).  Work on the wolf compound at Cedar Meadows, located on Norman Street, started in September.

Five, two-bedroom chalets will be available. One of the bedrooms will be inside and another one will have a glass roof and walls for people to experience sleeping under the stars and with the wolves. With close to 10 acres of land for the wolf compound, Lafleur said they could accommodate up to 22 wolves.
