Commanda Museum Reopens Church Built In 1883

It has been a labour of love for the volunteers at the Commanda Museum.

The Trinity Lutheran Church was built in Commanda in 1883. The church closed nine years ago, and the parishioners donated the building to the museum. However, funding stalled their ability to restore the building and make it safe for visitors.

Donations and grants, including a grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, has allowed museum volunteers to repair the church’s foundation, floors, windows and wiring. It’s now home to several exhibits honouring the rich heritage of the Commanda region.

However, funding continues to be an issue for the museum, but the volunteers are rising to the challenge! A new thrift shop will soon be opening along with event favourites like the Canada Day BBQ and Summerfest. Of course, the museum will be open this summer for visitors to peruse the gift shop and savour their (almost!) world famous milkshakes!

705BLACKFLY.COM videographer Jason Harris was there for the opening of the church. Watch our video to see inside the restored building and the tearful interview with the church’s former pastor.
