Construction is underway at long-term care homes in Parry Sound and Sudbury to create 54 modern long-term care beds. The projects stem from an investment from the Construction Funding Subsidy top-up.
Parry Sound’s Belvedere Heights will add 22 beds to the existing 101 beds
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to develop an additional 22 long-term care beds for our community,” said Pamela Wing, chair of the Belvedere Heights Board of Management. “Belvedere is a wonderful, warm, and caring home, and this expansion will provide much-needed accommodation for our seniors. We are extremely grateful to the Ministry of Long Term Care and Infrastructure Ontario for working very closely with us to make this project happen.”
A news release states that the expansion is part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario by creating good jobs and building for the future, while ensuring seniors get the quality of care and quality of life they need and deserve.
“Our government remains committed to strengthening Ontario’s long-term care system and nowhere is this commitment more evident than in Parry Sound-Muskoka,” Graydon Smith, MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka. “I’m thrilled that this important project is getting underway. The addition of 22 beds in Belvedere Heights will help those across West Parry Sound and McMurrich Monteith who need long-term care services, remain closer to home. I’m thankful to the Belvedere Heights board for helping to make this expansion a reality and grateful to the Ministry of Long-Term Care for expanded funding to support seniors in our community.”
“This expansion is great news for residents of Parry Sound and is part of our plan to protect seniors and increase access to world-class care across our province,” said John Jordan, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Long-Term Care. “When construction is complete, 22 additional residents will have a safe and modern place to call home.”
The home will be operated by the Board of Management for the District of Parry Sound West. The home is expected to welcome additional residents in winter 2027.
In Sudbury, construction has begun to add 32 modern long-term care beds at Hoivakoti Finlandia Nursing Home. These beds will complement the existing 112 beds currently at the home – who expect to welcome additional residents in fall 2026.
The Hoivakoti Finlandia Nursing Home’s website states that the facility houses 400 residents of various ethnic backgrounds and is “founded and maintained in the Finnish tradition.” Finland’s ambassador to Canada — Hanna-Leena Korteniemi — was in Sudbury to take part in the ground-breaking ceremony for the expansion project.
“Sudbury has a very special place in the history of Finns in Canada, and today the Finlandia Village carries on the close ties between our two countries,” said Korteniemi. “Hoivakoti Finlandia Nursing Home offers not just housing and care but also diverse cultural and other activities for senior citizens. It also plays an important role in upholding the culture, language and community spirit among Finnish Canadians. I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all those involved in the Hoivakoti Nursing Home for the tremendous work they are doing.”
The projects are part of the Ontario government’s commitment to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province. As of April 2025, 147 projects representing a total of 23,977 new and redeveloped beds are completed, under construction, or have ministry approval to construct.
