Crime Watch: August 7th

Barrie Police

On August 6th, the Barrie Police Service responded to two separate stabbing incidents within a period of just under 5 ½ hours.

The first incident occurred at 4:36 p.m. as the victim was attacked by a known male, while he slept in his tent in a wooded area adjacent to the southbound ramp to Highway 400 from northbound Bayfield Street. After being violently awakened, the suspect was chased by the victim westbound onto Bayfield Street, and then southbound to the Highway 400 northbound offramp where the suspect was observed to have placed an object on the ground. As this incident unfolded, unsuspecting members of the public became involved, which assisted police with what would evolve into an ongoing, but solvable investigation.

Upon arrival at the Highway 400 northbound offramp to Bayfield Street, police received details that led them to an area that is the former site of the YMCA near Grove Steet West. At the same time, the victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for a serious, but non-life-threatening injury.

Police located the suspect on Peel Street at 5:36 p.m. and took him into custody without incident. He was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued. The accused, who is of no fixed address, has been charged with Aggravated Assault, and is scheduled to appear today, by video, for a bail hearing with the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie.

In the second incident, which occurred at 9:59 p.m., a male walking his dog in the Dunlop and Owen Streets area became involved in an argument with an unknown male who stabbed him and the dog. The dog was treated for an injury and the victim was transported to a local hospital where he is receiving ongoing treatment for a stab wound.

The suspect, who is outstanding, is described as male, black, wearing a gray-coloured hoodie, dark shorts and running shoes was last seen running south on Owen Street. The Barrie Police Community Safety and Well Being High Harm Unit will continue to investigate this incident and are presently working to identify the suspect.

The Barrie Police Service wish to thank the public who were involved in both incidents yesterday as they provided responding officers with valuable information that ultimately led to the recovery of key evidence and the arrest of the person responsible in the first incident, and a description of the suspect being sought in the second incident.
