On January 23rd, Dennis and Linda Weaver addressed South River’s council about their allegations that South River-Machar firefighters stood by as their 10-year-old Golden Retriever, Brody, drowned on January 2nd in four feet of water in South River. An internal review and a Code of Conduct investigation has been completed and no violations of any policy or procedure of the South River Machar Fire Department or the Village of South River was found.
The Weavers, who had several friends attend to show their support, say they understand that firefighters must follow protocol, but more training needs to be provided in order to handle animal rescues.
The Weavers were given approximately 15 minutes to speak at the meeting, but the floor was not open for comments from other attendees. That upset some people, and it later sparked debate on social media.
The information gathered at the meeting is now under review. We will continue to follow this story.
