Discovery Routes Popular ReCycle Bikes Program In North Bay

Discovery Routes is expanding its popular ReCycle Bikes program to include gently used outdoor gear, helping even more people access the trails and experience the joy of the outdoors – all year round.

Since its launch in 2015, the ReCycle Bikes program has received and refurbished over 1,000 bicycles to individuals in need, a milestone reached in 2024. Building on this success, Discovery Routes will now also accept like-new items such as hiking poles, snowshoes, scooters, and cross-country skis.

In partnership with local community service organizations, trained volunteers match each bicycle and piece of equipment with local youth, families, and individuals who may face barriers to outdoor recreation.

“We’ve seen how a simple bike can make a huge difference,” says Lance Belanger, volunteer mechanic for ReCycle Bikes. “Now, by expanding to four-season gear, we can reach even more people and encourage active, healthy lifestyles throughout the year.”

As a registered charity with no government funding, Discovery Routes relies entirely on the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers who share its commitment to healthy living, sustainability, and community connection. Businesses interested in supporting the initiative are encouraged to sponsor the program, and individuals can make cash donations online.

Thanks to an ongoing partnership with Laurentian Ski Hill, a temporary workshop has been set up to accept donations. Gear should be in like-new condition, requiring minimal tune-up. Parameters for accepted outdoor gear are outlined on Discovery Routes’ website.
