Edible Book Festival Returning To Bracebridge Library

The Bracebridge Library is hosting an event that families can sink their teeth into. The Edible Book Festival is back!

It’s a novel idea – residents put their baking skills to the test by creating a tasty treat in the style of their favourite book. The categories are professionals, amateurs, and children. Participants make their creations at home and then deliver them to the Coulson Family Bracebridge Library between 10:00 a.m. and noon on Saturday, March 29th. The judges will spend the next hour deciding which entries are the best before allowing the public to see the submissions from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. The winners in each category will be announced just after 1:00 p.m. on the day of the event.

The list of previous entries reads like a who’s who of popular kids’ books. Mathew Reisler, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Bracebridge library, tells us that past themes have ranged from characters like Harry Potter and Thomas the Tank Engine, book covers including the famed Twilight series, and scenes from movies inspired by books, or puns – like clouds with spaghetti rain and meatballs for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

In our opinion, sugary treats take the cake, but entries can be anything edible.

“Participants are encouraged to create their favourite book titles, book covers or book character using food,” says Cindy Buhne, Adult and Information Services Librarian. “In past years, patrons have made some incredibly punny entries. While others showed off their baking skills and recreated scenes or characters from their favourite book.”

Registration for the festival is only required if you are entering the competition. Anyone interested in taking part can sign up on the library’s website. The public is welcome to attend and view the entries.
