Fire bans have been issued across Ontario including in Almaguin.  Kearney Fire Chief Paul Schaefer tells 705BLACKFLY.COM that full fire bans for the Town of Kearney, Perry Township, Armour, Burks Falls, Ryerson, Magnetawan and Sprucedale are now in effect. A total fire ban has also been implemented throughout the District of Muskoka.   In Northern Ontario, The Ontario Provincial Police say a highway between White River and Hornepayne was closed due to a forest fire causing “extremely dangerous conditions” in the area. That highway has now been reopened. Several communities, including White River, Hornepayne, Chapleau and the city of Elliot Lake, have issued fire bans. According to The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, this year’s Ontario wildfire season, which runs from April until October, has so far seen more than 138 square kilometres burned, compared to 23.8 square kilometres by this time last year. Fire Bans Include:
  • All open-air fires, including campfires, chiminea fireplaces, crop residue fires, fireworks, and any other type of outdoor burning, are prohibited.
  • All open-air fire permits are cancelled for the duration of the ban. Gas-fired and charcoal barbecues and outdoor propane fireplaces are still permitted.
Residents are asked to report fire ban violations by calling 911. If you are caught violating the ban and it results in a response by firefighters, you could be fined and charged the full cost of the service call.   For more on this story listen to our interview with Kearney Fire Chief Paul Schaefer.
