It was nice to see everyone stop and show respect at 11 o’clock today at the mall. I got to thinking (I guess you can say “by accident”) how much blood has been spilled over the years from that damn pin on our beloved poppies that we support every year. As I stood in the mall at that moment of silence, I was tending to the wound that I had just inflicted on myself. How appropriate I thought if everyone equated how much blood was lost on both sides compared to that drop I just donated. We take for granted the gore, death and trauma involved with real war situations mainly because the media and film industry have made us insensitive in so many ways. We have protected our children and delicate ones from the reality of what really happens in battle. That is where the war began for many and never leaves them. The rest of us reap the benefits of safe homelands with restful nights’ sleep. So, I take my hat off to the Canadian heroes that lost their lives and others that endured the horrors of war to make our life and homes safe. I will gladly lose a little blood whenever I stick my finger from that damn poppy pin I so proudly wear, and I now take a moment every time this happens to give thanks and reflect. DDT
