Gravenhurst Amends Cemetery By-law

Writer: Emma MacIsaac

Cemeteries in Gravenhurst recently changed their community by-laws. Town-operated cemeteries now request that visitors placing flowers, wreaths, or potted plants in remembrance only do so between May 1st and October 15th. Visitors are only permitted to leave one wreath or flower arrangement on a plot at a time.

Visitors to the cemetery are cautioned that any flowers, wreaths, or potted plants placed in remembrance after October 15th can be removed by cemetery staff at any time per the new restrictions. Staff also wishes to remind visitors that anything other than the standard flowers, wreaths, and potted plants is prohibited from being left behind at graves.

The Town of Gravenhurst said in a news release, “It is important to remember those we have lost but to make sure we do it in a way that is respectful to other visitors to the cemetery.” They request that any flowers, wreaths, or potted plants be removed after 30 days to help keep the cemetery in top condition.

Caroline Kirkpatrick, Manager of Operations for the Town of Gravenhurst, told 705blackfly.com that the by-law amendment is solely to ensure that all residents and employees are aware of standard operating procedures.
