OPP LOOKING TO CONDUCT WELLNESS CHECK ON SNOWMOBILE DRIVER

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is requesting the driver of a snowmobile whose machine went through the ice on Rainy Lake near 5 Mile Dock Road to contact police so officers can conduct a wellness check.  On March 15, 2023, at approximately 1:00 p.m. Fort Frances OPP received a report of a snowmobile that went through the ice on Rainy Lake. Witnesses observed a snowmobiler go through the ice near 5 Mile Dock Road just east of Fort Frances. The operator exited the ice and was seen leaving on a separate machine. Police are looking to identify the driver so a wellness check can be conducted and confirm with the driver there were no other occupants.  OPP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) and K-9 have been deployed to assist in locating the male. Police ask anyone with information to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

DRIVER OF SNOWMOBILE WITH NO HELMET WAS IMPAIRED

(NORTH BAY, ON) – A person that was traveling on their motorized snow vehicle (MSV) with no helmet, was stopped by the police and charged.  On March 10, 2023, at approximately 3:18 p.m., members of the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting Motorized Snow Vehicle Patrol when the driver of an MSV was stopped for not wearing a helmet.  As a result of the investigation, the driver was found to have been consuming alcoholic beverages. The driver was then arrested and transported to the North Bay OPP Detachment for further testing.

The driver, Joseph SCHEURWATER, 30-years-of-age from Southampton was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80.
  • Drive with no helmet.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension and the MSV was impounded for seven days.

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on April 4, 2023.
