The North Bay Police Service has launched a new initiative to address the growing number of traffic-related complaints from the public. As part of this effort, the NBPS Traffic Enforcement Unit is now issuing Traffic Infraction Warning Letters to registered vehicle owners whose vehicles have been reported for unsafe driving behaviors.
Throughout 2024, the North Bay Police Service received 1,463 traffic complaints from members of the community. These complaints ranged from reports of speeding and reckless driving to concerns about dangerous behavior behind the wheel. There have also been numerous complaints about motorists passing stopped school buses with their red lights flashing.
Historically, such complaints were recorded by call-takers or officers at the front desk and followed up with increased patrols or a phone call. Starting in May 2025, the NBPS began mailing Traffic Infraction Warning Letters to vehicle owners when a licence plate was identified in a public complaint.
To date, 25 warning letters have been issued as part of the pilot phase.
What to Know If You Receive a Letter:
- A member of the public has reported your vehicle being driven in an unsafe manner.
- The complaint has been officially logged in our call-for-service system.
- This information may be accessed by officers in the future.
- The letter is a warning only and will not affect your driving record.
- No demerit points will be issued.
- Your insurance company will not be notified.
If a vehicle continues to be the subject of traffic complaints, further follow-up may be conducted by the Traffic Enforcement Unit. In cases involving serious or repeated infractions, a formal police investigation may be initiated. This could include collecting witness statements and potentially laying charges.
Commitment to Road Safety
“Our goal is to ensure safer roads for everyone,” said a representative of the NBPS Traffic Enforcement Unit. “These letters are intended to raise awareness and encourage responsible driving without immediately resorting to penalties.”
The North Bay Police Service appreciates the public’s assistance in reporting unsafe driving. Residents are encouraged to continue submitting concerns to help improve safety throughout the community.
