Ontario Sees Alarming Increase In Impaired Driving In 2023

The Ontario Provincial Police have released impaired driving statistics for 2023 and the numbers are alarming.

OPP 2023 IMPAIRED DRIVING STATS

  • Over 11,000 impaired driving charges were laid.
  • 404 lives were lost in motor vehicle collisions with 50 of them dying as a result of an alcohol/drug-related collision.
  • 49 additional lives were lost in off-road or marine fatalities in 2023.

94 people died in speed-related collisions investigated by the OPP in 2023.

Over 2,400 RIDE programs were held across Southwestern Ontario between November 16th and January 1st. A total of 353 impaired driving charges were laid across the 13 OPP detachments, and 55 warning range suspensions were issued. Some areas saw double the number of arrests over last year.

In the North East Region alone 98 people were charged with impaired driving offences during the holiday R.I.D.E program which was from November 16, 2023, until January 1, 2024. 78 of the drivers charged were impaired by the consumption of alcohol, while 20 drivers were impaired as a result of the consumption of a drug.

Apart from these criminal charges, 26 people were issued a 3-day driver’s license suspension and one person a 7-day license suspension, as a result of registering an “Alert” on an approved screening device.
