Snowmobiling is a great sport, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t take the right precautions. There are the basics – wear proper gear, be aware of weather and trail conditions, and carry a safety kit. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt gets some more important snowmobile safety advice from Ron Arnold, Conservation Officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Safety Tips

  1. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back.
  2. Carry a personal locator beacon. It can save your life in areas where there is no cell phone service.
  3. Always carry ice picks.
  4. Be mindful of vehicle traffic.
  5. Ride on 8-10 inches of solid blue ice.
  6. Wear a floater suit or flotation device in case you fall through unsafe ice.
  7. NO ICE IS SAFE ICE.
