Snowmobiling is a great sport, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t take the right precautions. There are the basics – wear proper gear, be aware of weather and trail conditions, and carry a safety kit. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt gets some more important snowmobile safety advice from Ron Arnold, Conservation Officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
Safety Tips
- Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back.
- Carry a personal locator beacon. It can save your life in areas where there is no cell phone service.
- Always carry ice picks.
- Be mindful of vehicle traffic.
- Ride on 8-10 inches of solid blue ice.
- Wear a floater suit or flotation device in case you fall through unsafe ice.
- NO ICE IS SAFE ICE.
