OPP Warn About Scam Targeting Motorists

The Ontario Provincial Police are warning the public about a new scam targeting drivers through text messages.

According to police, fraudsters send a text message appearing to be from the Ontario government regarding traffic violations. Unsuspecting victims are led to believe that they have to pay a fine after being caught on automated photo radar systems used by numerous municipalities.

Provincial police confirmed that text and email messages are not sent to anyone ticketed by these devices. The ticket is mailed out to the registered address of the vehicle’s owner, making them aware of the infraction and the corresponding penalty.

To prevent being the victim of any scam, police strongly recommend that people verify all information that they receive before proceeding.
