Preparing For Winter Driving Conditions

North Bay Police Urge Drivers to Stay Safe and Prepared for Winter Roads

We all remember last year’s wicked winter weather that led to hundreds of crashes and delays that lasted for days. As winter weather returns, the North Bay Police Service is reminding motorists to prepare their vehicles and adjust their driving habits. Cold temperatures, snow, and ice can change road conditions quickly, making it important for drivers to slow down, stay alert, and plan ahead.

“Taking the time to prepare your vehicle and adjust your driving can prevent collisions and keep everyone on the road safer,” said Acting Inspector deHaas of the North Bay Police Service. “If road conditions are poor, slow down or wait until it’s safe to travel. A few extra minutes can make all the difference in getting to your destination safely.”

Winter Tire and Studded Tire Information

Improve traction and control in frost, snow, and icy conditions.

Shorten braking distances by as much as 25%.

Install four winter tires — never mix tire types.

Check tires regularly for wear and pressure; cold weather reduces tire pressure.

Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, indicating suitability for severe snow conditions.

All-Season and Studded Tires

All-season tires can lose grip above 7°C and are less effective in winter conditions.

– Studded tires provide similar stopping distances as winter tires but are less effective on bare pavement.

– Studded tires are permitted on vehicles registered in Northern Ontario, but not in Southern Ontario, unless visiting from out-of-province or a Northern Ontario resident.

Winter Driving Safety:

– Check driving conditions: Use Ontario 511 before you leave and consider delaying your trip if conditions are poor. Website: ontario.ca/511, X: @511Ontario, Phone: 511

– Clear your vehicle: Remove ice and snow from all windows, mirrors, lights, and roof.

– Drive cautiously: Slow down, give extra space between vehicles, and avoid using cruise control; stopping distances increase on slippery roads.

– Steer carefully: Avoid sudden braking, acceleration, or sharp turns.

– Stay focused: Keep your attention on the road and minimize distractions. Watch for shaded areas, bridges, and overpasses that freeze earlier than other sections of the road.

– Use your lights: Turn on full vehicle lighting in poor visibility, and pull over safely if needed.

Be Prepared for an Emergency:

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including:

  • Blanket
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Booster cables
  • Extra windshield washer fluid
