Get your dancing shoes on and join the talented young performers at The SPACE Upstairs Spring Showcase on June 4th in Burk’s Falls.
The event features original performances by students and community artists — a fitting celebration of arts access in education.
“The title for this year is ‘Creativity Blooms’,” says artistic director Jillian Peever. “And what I wanted to do this year is let the children be more involved with the actual creation of the dances.”
The evening will also feature an official announcement about a grant from the Ontario Arts Council to bring contemporary dance to rural students. The program is called Artists in Schools — a new initiative bringing professional dance into classrooms across the Almaguin Highlands by connecting students directly with working artists. Through in-school workshops and collaborative creation, the program offers young people the chance to explore movement, creativity, and live performance — often for the first time.
“In rural regions, the arts can feel out of reach,” says Jillian. “This program brings the experience to where students already are — and invites them to see themselves as artists, too.”
