A new poll from the Angus Reid Institute says Canadians are hitting their limit when it comes to tipping. 62% of respondents say they’re being asked to tip more often AND leave bigger tips. So, 705BLACKFLY.COM asked YOU if tipping is out of control, and here’s what our readers had to say:
Marcia Messing Tymochko: It’s (a) little demanding but remember you can always refuse.
Joanne Hooper-Greening: Yes, everyone wants a tip without doing (anything). I order a pizza online and then I go and pick it up and when I’m paying the pin pad is asking for a 15 or 18 percent tip. Yes, I know you can bypass it but I think it’s ridiculous to even have it on there. So, someone made the pizza but aren’t they getting paid to do that? I thought we tipped for the service we get in a sit down restaurant and only if the service was good. It’s like it is becoming mandatory to dish out the extra.
Mike Slater: Yes. Not only is everyone asking for tips, they are asking for a higher percentage. How about no tips for anyone?
Dru Humphrey: Just watched a clip on CBC News about a restaurant paying decent wage to staff, and asking customers NOT to tip. Owner said it was going over well and sales rising because of word of mouth.
