Algoma OPP investigating fatal hit & run, Gravenhurst transit study, Barrie Winterfest returns

EAST ALGOMA OPP IS INVESTIGATING A FATAL HIT AND RUN

Members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a fatal hit and run collision involving a pedestrian.

On January 20, 2023, shortly after 9:00 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle collision in which a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 17, near Green Bay Road and Boundary Road in Plummer Additional Township (west of the Town of Bruce Mines).

The East Algoma OPP Crime Unit with assistance from the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team and Sault Ste Marie OPP Forensic Identification Services is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Officers are looking for possible dash cam footage from anyone who may have been traveling on Highway 17 near Green Bay Road, west of the Town of Bruce Mines. The footage can be uploaded to the following link: https://ontarioprovincialpolice.ca.evidence.com/axon/citizen/public/bruce_mines

126 CHARGES LAID IN THUNDER BAY CMV BLITZ
A 2-day joint Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Blitz in the City of Thunder Bay has resulted in numerous charges being laid. Thunder Bay OPP and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation conducted the blitz on the Highway 102/Dawson Road corridor. In total, 126 charges were laid.

POLICE SEEKING WITNESSES TO FAIL TO REMAIN COLLISION

On Tuesday January 17, 2023 at approximately 9:13pm, members of the Nottawasaga Detachment of the OPP responded to a fail to remain crash in the area of King Street and Auburn Street, Angus, Essa Township.

The victim was walking eastbound on King Street, when the suspect vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on King Street, and then turned northbound on Auburn Street at the same time the victim was within the intersection, striking the pedestrian. The vehicle did not remain at the scene and was last observed idling on Auburn Street, and then reversing and travelling eastbound on King Street.

Police believe the suspect vehicle is either navy or black, older model sedan, unknown make or model and are looking for witnesses to help identify the involved vehicle.
It is believed that the involved vehicle may have damage to the front fender, door, and a broken headlight. The driver of the suspect vehicle is described as a Caucasian male, between the ages of thirty and forty, with a short beard with unkept hair.

VISITOR TO MUSKOKA HITS PARKED CAR

Bracebridge OPP are reporting a second Impaired driver on January 20th, 2023. Just before 11:00 p.m. a concerned citizen called the police when they observed a vehicle hit a parked car on Brock Street in Gravenhurst.

Moments later an officer who was in the vicinity of the collision located the vehicle near Hotchkiss Street. Further investigation led to the arrest of 34-year-old Gilles BARRIAULT from Prince Edward Island and was charged with the following:

⦁ Operation While Impaired CC 320.14(1)(a)
⦁ Over 80 CC 320.14(1)(b)
⦁ Fail to remain HTA 200(1)(a)
⦁ Disobey stop sign HA 136(1)(a)
⦁ Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available LLCA 42(1)(b)

He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on February 14, 2023, to answer to his charges.

GRAVENHURST EXAMINING TRANSIT SOLUTIONS
The Town of Gravenhurst is undertaking a Transit Feasibility Study led by the consulting firm Left Turn Right Turn (LTRT).

NEW ART PROJECT SALUTES BARRIE BUSINESS
The downtown Barrie BIA has partnered with 16 local artists to pay homage to Fab Trays. The artists will paint designs on aluminum discs to hang in the downtown Barrie alley, drawing inspiration from the vintage trays. Designed and handcrafted in Barrie in the 1960s and 70s, Fab Trays were made by Hardy Glenwood Products, using designer fabrics sealed in a clear polyester composition and were carried in major department stores throughout Canada and the United States.
