Uncover The History of P.O.W. Camp 20 in Gravenhurst

One of the darkest eras in human history was felt all over the world – including Gravenhurst. The Gravenhurst Public Library, in partnership with the Gravenhurst Archives, is inviting everyone to an evening presentation highlighting Camp 20, the prisoner of war camp in the town during the Second World War.

“When 478 German prisoners of war were marched through our streets on June 30, 1940, towards their new home in POW Camp 20, the people of Gravenhurst had no idea how their lives might be affected,” says historian Judy Humphries. “Join us as we rediscover the lives of these POWs, the challenges for the 200 Veterans Guards who would be their keepers, and the effect of six years of ‘life with the Nazis’ on the people of Gravenhurst.”

“Led by local historian and archivist Judy Humphries, this presentation delves into Camp 20’s establishment and operation,” library CEO Julia Reinhart said. “By attending the session, people will learn the unique history and role of the POW camp in Gravenhurst. The presentation will touch on such things as daily life in the camp and the camp’s enduring influence on local and national history.”

The event is at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at the library, 180 Sharpe St. W. Those interested can also attend virtually through Zoom. Virtual participants must register in advance through the Gravenhurst Public Library website. There is no cost to attend the event.

Humphries’ expertise will bring to life the stories of those who lived and laboured here, making this an unmissable event for history lovers, students, and curious minds alike.
