Discovery Routes Launches 2026 Gear Drive In North Bay

After reaching a major milestone of 1,231 bicycles refurbished and redistributed since 2015, Discovery Routes is officially kicking off its 2026 ReCycle Bikes and outdoor gear collection.

The program, which relies on a dedicated team of community volunteers, is calling on residents to clear out their garages and help put equipment into the hands of those who need it most. While the program began with a focus on cycling, it has evolved into a year-round initiative. Discovery Routes is now seeking high-quality, gently used gear – including hiking poles, snowshoes, scooters, and cross-country skis – to ensure that barriers to the outdoors are removed in every season.

“Every bike we redistribute represents a new opportunity for someone in our community to gain independence, explore their community and improve their health,” says Lance Belanger, ReCycle Bikes volunteer mechanic. “By donating gear that might be gathering dust in a basement or shed, residents are directly contributing to a more healthy, active, connected and cleaner North Bay.”

In collaboration with local service organizations, volunteers ensure every piece of equipment is matched with youth and families who otherwise may not have access to recreational gear. As a registered charity operating without government funding, the program’s success depends entirely on local generosity, partnership donations and the collaboration with partners like Laurentian Ski Hill, which hosts the program’s temporary workshop.

How to Donate:

Donated gear should be in like-new condition and require only minimal maintenance. Discovery Routes offers a $25 charitable tax receipt for every bicycle or qualifying gear item donated in good working order.
