Police Investigating After Senior Targeted By Roofing Scam

Investigators with the Barrie Police Service Fraud Unit are warning residents about a recent incident involving a roofing repair company that attempted to defraud an elderly Barrie man out of thousands of dollars.

On March 16, 2026, police were called to a local financial institution after concerns were raised about a possible fraud involving an 84-year-old man attempting to withdraw a significant amount of money for alleged roof repairs. Police learned individuals had reportedly damaged the man’s chimney and were demanding payment for repairs while threatening to report the damage if he refused to pay.

Through the investigation, the senior explained he was at his home in the area of Nelson and Codrington streets when he heard loud banging coming from his roof. Shortly after, two males dressed like contractors knocked on his door and offered their services to repair his chimney.

The victim told police the contractors threatened he would lose his house if he didn’t pay to have the chimney fixed. A contract listed the company as Ontario Roof Repairs & Masonry.

Investigators are hoping to identify the parties involved in the attempted fraud. Anyone with information is encouraged to report it with the Barrie Police Service Fraud Unit online, or with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Unit.  To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Members of the community are reminded to be cautious of unsolicited contractors, avoid making rushed payments under pressure, and consider seeking a second opinion before agreeing to costly home repairs.
