North Bay Police have issued a public safety statement about “…a possible gathering involving individuals whose views have raised community concerns.”
Information about the event is being circulated on social media and its name clearly references discrimination. In a news release, the human rights organization B’nai Brith Canada is warning that the event could be used to sell hate propaganda and attract white supremacists to the region. The release also states that some organizers include members of groups known to state “…violent rhetoric and conspiracy theories about immigrants. They have also advocated for non-white Canadians to “remigrate” out of this country.”
The organization has contacted Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli who is also Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade; Pauline Rochefort, who represents Nipissing—Timiskaming in Parliament; and Peter Chirico, the Mayor of North Bay.
North Bay Police say that the right to lawful expression and peaceful assembly is protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. They add that they remain committed to their role facilitating safe and lawful gatherings, regardless of viewpoint, while maintaining public order and protecting the community.
The news release also states that “Actions or communications that meet the threshold of a criminal offence, including the promotion of violence against an identifiable group, will be addressed by police.”
A local community group has announced via Facebook that they will be holding a counter-protest. Police are urging community members to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid engaging with or confronting individuals, and report any concerning, suspicious, or criminal behaviour to police
B’nai Brith Canada says, “As a society, we must stand together and say no to (the event) and the culture of hate it represents.”
